The Smell

Morning of September 15, 1969. Monday.

As I ride the crowded school bus in the early morning, heading south down Highway Seventeen, I am soon aware that I am actually on a rocket going to the moon where my school is (though the inside of the school bus looks as it does in real life). My school is the same building, only now on the moon’s surface. I feel a slight sensation at times of the bus rising in the air. (In real life during this time period, I also had often lightly daydreamed that my school bus was a different method of travel on different days, both in going to school and returning home - for example, the rocket going to my school on the moon as here, a submarine going to my school in an underwater city, a locomotive going out to my school in the desert, a time machine, an airplane, a subway train, and so on.)

In my dream, I am in my classroom in the left-most row of desks in about the middle of the row and facing south. Farther to my left is a very large window (not a real-life feature). Instead of the outside, though, it seems to be a laboratory. The Disney cartoon character Emil Eagle is there, picking up and pouring test tubes and seemingly planning something questionable and likely with bad intent, perhaps even an intent to poison all the students and the female teacher. (However, he may just be trying to create a "hair-growing formula" as in a similar aspect of the real story I'd read.)

My teacher and classmates do not seem to be aware of what he is doing. I notice a very strong and unpleasant odor in my dream - which is much like asphalt and very foul and increasingly uncomfortable to be aware of. I am a little worried about the smell and hold onto a concern about possibly being poisoned by noxious gas (yet I do not leave the classroom out of concern of being blamed for disrupting the class). Although my dreams typically do not focus so much on the sense of smell, this one, again, is very clear and strong. I think about pointing out that Emil Eagle is responsible for any bad smells as a few people (including the teacher) seem to be becoming aware of the odor, but I am not sure if I should say anything. Oddly, I do not make the connection that he is only a villainous Disney comic book character. Quoting from comicvine.com: "Emil Eagle is a criminal inventor that has served as an opponent to several characters. He debuted in 'The Evil Inventor' (May, 1966) where he served as a villainous counterpart to Gyro Gearloose. He was created by Jack Bradbury, Steve Steere and Vic Lockman."

This dream was possibly alerting me to the fact that breathing in the fumes of asphalt is probably not a good idea, something I had not thought about to any greater extent at the time prior to my dream, though it remained an unpleasant reality of traveling in town and being in school. In short, the nature of percentage of senses in dreams seems to be the same as in reality, although sounds are often louder and clearer as with the other senses often being enhanced in dreams.
