Along the Wayside

Morning of July 2, 1972. Sunday.

This dream was very vivid and reoccurred (or “reset”) at least once. I suppose the title is not very imaginative or descriptive but it is the original one I came up with and wrote at age eleven.

I am riding in the back seat of a car that my father is driving (one from real life) and I believe my mother is in the back seat on my left in at least one version of this dream. We seem to be going north down a more featureless area of Highway Seventeen (now called Cubitis Avenue) in Florida, just past Brownsville, I think, or it may be in another area of Florida. It does not seem close to where we live. I look out the window to my right.

On the wayside of the one-lane highway (which does not seem that well-maintained in my dream - not quite wide enough for two lanes of traffic unless one drives on the wayside when passing or coming from the other direction), is a cougar in mid-pounce seemingly "stuck" in the air, facing to the south in the opposite direction from where we are headed, not moving, as if time had somehow frozen. There appears to be some sort of time barrier, where, when it leaped, it got stuck in an area where time perhaps moved much more slowly. Later on, time seems to pass between this and the next scene where we are again driving and I am supposedly a year or two older. The cougar is still there but now his front paws are lightly touching the ground. Unlike other dreams where there is the presence of a cougar, there is no fear at all at any point here. I only feel slightly puzzled by the animal’s true or eventual fate.
