This is a beautiful but unusual small area, beyond which there is nothing. It’s circular, the ground made of large pink-red stones. Around the border are pillars, and sitting on top of these is another level, seemingly made of clouds.
I focus on the ground level first. I don’t seem to have a body, but I can go where I will, to some extent. My maneuverability is somewhat lacking and I end up looking at things from odd angles, which is mildly frustrating. I can sink all the way to the glistening stones and twirl around the pillars, which is fun.
The main attraction is a green humanoid creature. I inspect it from directly above at first. I can see its forehead is a lime green that encircles the entire face, but the rest of the body is a deep green. Suddenly its face is uplifted and it's looking directly at me. It is quite petite and feminine looking, with a small nose, big glistening eyes, and elf-like ears. Then I notice its face and entire body is covered in black web-like markings or tattoos, or perhaps it actually is part of its natural coloring.
I sort of sink down and away so that I’m looking at it from behind, and here the creature perplexes me because its head is always facing me. I never actually see movement, but it is like as I shift positions, it is instantly shifted as well. One moment its head is turned 180 degrees to look at me. I shift, and the head is under its left arm, grinning impishly. Then again it is suddenly near its right shoulder. It’s playing with me. Other than this, everything in the dream is very still.
I float up to the top level. There are items here, but the thing that attracts me is what looks like a plastic animal toy. It’s about a foot high, and resembles a cross between a dog and giraffe. It’s bright pink, and like the green humanoid, has the same black web markings on its body. Then it comes to me that I had a collection of these types of toys when I was younger, all lined up on the shelf above my bed.
I continue breezing around and come across a yellow plastic horse at the base of one of the pillars. This one I instantly recognize as one from my childhood that belonged to a castle dollhouse playset.
This is a term which refers to that aspect of the symbolism of space
which is concerned with the simple moral pattern deriving from the notions of
height and—ultimately—of centre. Hindu doctrine describes the three fundamental states of the human spirit as sattva, which is ‘loftiness’ of spirit; rajas—
manifestation, struggle and dynamism; and tamas, or obscurity and brute instinct; and these three states are located on three vertical levels. Strictly speaking,
there are five zones or levels: the absolute low level and the absolute high level,
plus the central area divided into three zones merging into each other and at the same time bringing the outer extremes into progressive relationship. When the
baser levels concern not the intellectual but the moral—which is in essence infinitely more complex and mysterious—then the precise significance of the symbolism is not nearly so hard-and-fast. There is always the possibility of symbolic
Inversion, in which case the two opposing directions have something in common
in that both partake of the idea of depth. Hence the saying: ‘Deep calls to deep.’
The temptations endured by the chosen few find their counterpart in the abysses
of salvation which may be opened up for the reprobate. Dostoievski has spoken
eloquently about this. Finally, here is a quotation from L’Art chinois by M.
Paléologue, written in 1888: ‘Under the Chinese Chou dynasty (11th century
B.C.), the dead of the lower classes were buried in the plains; princes, on hills of
moderate height; and emperors in tombs built on a mountain-top. The head of the
corpse would be turned to face North.’ In virtually every work of art whose
composition is of an ideological rather than a naturalistic character, the verticalline locates the Three Worlds of the infernal, terrestrial (with its own, internal
orders—the marine, the animal and the human) and celestial. Thus, in the
Mesopotamian stele (or Kudurru), the illustrations are arranged on several levels,
divided off by lines to suggest their relative values: the most primitive beings are
placed at the lowest level (since they are closest to the ‘primordial monster’)
while astral bodies and symbols of the godhead are situated on the highest plane.
The same principles are true of Romanesque art.
Toys are symbols of temptation. According to Diel, this is the meaning
when, in Greek mythology, the Titans offer toys to the infant Dionysos (15). A
similar trial confronted Achilles when he was given a choice of jewels and valuables, among them a sword, which the hero chose without hesitation.

In the Zohar, the ‘magic head’ stands for astral light (9); in mediaeval art
it is a symbol for the mind (46) and for the spiritual life, which explains the
frequency with which it appeared in decorative art. On the other hand, Plato in
Timaeus asserts that ‘the human head is the image of the world’. In corroboration
of this, Leblant points out that the skull, the semi-spherical crown of the human
body, signifies the heavens. Clearly, the head-symbol here coalesces with that of
the sphere as a symbol of Oneness. It had the same significance in Egyptian
hieroglyphics (19). The eagle’s head has been used as a solar symbol and an
emblem of the centre-point of emanation—that is, of the cosmic flame and the
spiritual fire of the universe (4). Two, three or four heads shown in juxtaposition
symbolize a corresponding intensification of a given aspect of head-symbolism.
Thus, the Gemini, a symbol of the duality of Nature, or of the integrating (but not
unifying) link between the two principles of creation, are represented by beings
with two heads or two faces, like the Roman Janus for example. Hecate is depicted with three heads—she is called triform for this reason—a symbolism
which may be related to the ‘three levels’ of heaven, earth and hell, as well as to
Diel’s three ‘urges of life’ (15). The juxtaposition of four heads or faces, as in the
image of Brahma the Supreme Lord, stems from the same symbolism as that of
the tetramorph (60). A factor of major importance bearing upon the symbolism of
the head is mentioned by Herbert Kühn, in his L’Ascension de l’humanité (Paris,
1958). He makes the point that the decapitation of corpses in prehistoric times
marked Man’s discovery of the independence of the spiritual principle, residing
in the head, as opposed to the vital principle represented by the body as a whole.
Kühn adds that Neolithic thought was very close to the mediaeval in its conviction that an eternal and invisible essence underlies all appearances (Plate XV).
