Live, and You Weren't Meant to Die

I’m in the high school gym when I run into Cory. We catch up briefly, having not seen each other in so long. He asks for my email, so we can keep in touch. Not having his phone on him, he turns to group of guys he was hanging out with. Caleb is one of these boys, and Cory takes Caleb’s phone out of his hands and hands it to me. “Oh, great, it’s always my phone,” Caleb complains half-heartedly. I laugh and inform him I’ll only upload a few viruses, so he doesn’t have to worry. This gets him to laugh. I struggle to type in my email, which looks like “username@otherusername.gmail.com” It doesn’t look right to me, but I go with it.
Now I’m in the woods. I leave the tree line to walk up on the back of an old salvage yard. I walk past rusty cars with mean dogs in them. They growl and snap at me as I step by. An Australian Shepard dog goes from car to car, acting extremely aggressive and territorial. When it growls and shows its’ teeth at me, I see fingers between them.
I return to the trees, where I’m hunted. A group of people are trying to kill me and a guy I’m with. The guy gets a cut that spans across his chest. One of the killers gets me and has me by the throat. He holds up a blade, ready to strike. My vision is starting to blur from the lack of oxygen. The only thing I can focus on is his nice grey clothes, and huge eagle earrings the size of paper plates that tug painfully at his earlobes. At the last second, before the killer stabs me in the side of the head, my guy friend tackles him to the ground. The eagle-earring killer topples over a cliff and breaks his neck at the bottom. Me and the guy run through the trees, snow now covering everything.
We suddenly end up outside of a cafe, aware of the suddenness. We realize that none of what just happened, the trees, being hunted, almost being killed, actually happened. It was all just a test. Since we didn’t die during the test, we weren’t meant to die. However, my friend still has a scar across his chest. How’s that though, if it was all fake?
We go inside the cafe and sit down at one of the tables. I see eagle-earring guy wearing the same grey clothes sitting at a table near. I get up and sit directly across from the killer, despite my friend’s protests. I demand answers. The killer tells me that it was just a test and that it’s over now. We weren’t meant to die.
I ask how we still have scars if it was all just a test. I follow up with the treat of taking off the grey scarf wrapped around his neck, because I’m sure it is hiding his snapped spine. I want to know how it’s possible.
Then I’m in a game store with my grandparents and mom. I run into Cory again. We stand in line and talk for a bit. Somehow something awkward gets brought up and I switch the conversation by taking about what he’s buying. He notices the switch, but he graciously doesn’t mention it. Before he can finish telling me about his purchase, it’s my turn to pay. I’m buying two games and a console. I realize I don’t have the money in my account but I can write a check and have mom pay my account, and I’ll pay her back. I end up taking so long writing this two hundred fifty dollar check on a yellow legal envelope check that the girl that was bagging, Ruby, opens another lane. I have to verify that my account is legit on the front of the envelope by a four digit code. They assumed I used part of my social security number or a phone number to choose this code, but I chose 1322, which is unverifiable. Since the cashier knows me, as she was my computer and business teacher in high school, she lets it go.
Granny gives me a big hug once I get outside, and jokes that we’re growing money. I don’t understand. We’re about to leave when Papa’s red truck is blocked in by four vacuum cleaners and two peanut butter jars full of wet concrete. I move them out of the way just enough to not be blocking us. I walk back to the store and Papa and Mom are laughing about something. They look at me expectantly, and I say I didn’t hear. They repeat what was so funny, but I don’t find it funny at all. I chuckle anyway. They continue talking about the apocalypse being here. I ignore them and look over at this semi driver who’s back cab is full of toilet paper that he just bought. It makes me nervous, like I haven’t stocked up enough. [End]
